Accessibility — how this site is built

This site is built to be usable by everyone, including people who use a keyboard, a screen reader, or reduced-motion settings. Accessibility is part of the build, not an addition to it.

Conformance target

This site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at conformance level AA. That is the target every page is built and checked against.

What has been checked so far: keyboard-only use of every page, the visible focus outline and its contrast, reduced-motion handling, live status announcements on tool pages, alt text on images, and new-tab warnings on external links.

Known limitations

No formal, independent WCAG audit of this site has been carried out yet, so conformance is self-assessed against the checks above, not independently verified.

Documents linked from this site, such as PDF guides on other organisations’ sites, are outside this site’s control and have not been checked for accessibility.

The interactive tools need JavaScript to run. Without it, the tool itself does not work — the guide, sources and related links on the same page still do, and each tool page says so.

Keyboard and screen reader

Every page can be used with a keyboard alone. A skip link at the top of each page jumps to the main content. Interactive elements show a visible focus outline, and the mobile menu is a dialog: it traps focus while open, closes with Escape, and returns focus to the button that opened it.

Tool results are announced to screen readers through a live status region, and every image carries alt text that describes the scene. Links that open in a new tab say so.

Text and contrast

Body text is set in a large, legible sans-serif face at a comfortable line height, and headings use a serif face at a larger size. The focus outline is a dark teal with a contrast ratio of 9.07:1 against white.

Reduced motion

Readers who prefer reduced motion get it: the site honours the reduced-motion setting and disables smooth scrolling and transitions.

Images and video

This site uses still images only — no video, no auto-playing media. Every figure carries a one-line photo credit.

Feedback

If something on this site is hard to use, report it by email to [email protected] or via the Contact page. Say which page you were on and what the barrier was — that is enough; do not send personal health questions or medical details. See also About and the Editorial Policy.
